We made the long journey north to Borneo specifically to visit Tanjung Puting

national park and to see the Orang-Utans.

But the park is home to many more creatures including the rarely seen Clouded Leopard,

the Sun Bear, birds of many kinds and Probiscus and Red Lipped and monkeys as well as Long Tailed Macaques.

Our trip upriver in a local Klotik gave us a front row view of the monkeys.

The crew of these boats provided us with all meals, drinks and snacks as well as arranging our

beds on the top deck each night. they were led by our guide, Pardi, a Maluy indian who had an

encyclopedic knowledge of the forests and wildlife

As we wound our way upriver it became both narrower and shallower, with many overhanging trees

and underwater obstacles

We had been able to book a larger Klotik and we made the trip with the three other boats we

have been travelling with since Kupang.

As well as the Klotiks plying the river there were also many other local boats going upstream

to the villages inland

The National Park was created after studies done with the Orang_Utans by Dr Birute Galdikas

the least known of the famous anthropologist Louise Leakey's students that included Diane Fossey
