Our arrival in Raffles Marina, Singapore certainly felt like another
milestone passed on our journey around the world.
Having spent the last three months in the remote islands of Indonesia our
arrival here was something of a culture shock with restaurants, swimming
pools, 10 pin bowling alleys and even a climbing wall within the marina
complex.
Just two days ago and less than 100nm south we spent the night anchored off
a small fishing village, and welcomed some of the locals and their children
on to the boat. Wearing ragged clothes and without footwear, they were full
of smiles, interested in us and our floating homes, grateful for the small
gifts of books, crayons and sweets for the kids and T shirts, caps and pens
for the adults they offered fish and squid in return which we declined with
as much grace as we could, explaining that we had enough food on board. They
said their goodbyes before dark and sculled off back to the village in small
wooden boats, waving all the way until out of sight.
Another world!
