We arrived at the island of Lawa Laut (or as Alan renamed it Lager Lout)
a lovely bay with small hills, numerous little beaches and a fringe of reef
We had been told there were Manta Rays in the area and were really
looking forward to the chance of being able to see them
On the morning of our second day we had the priviledge of swimming with
two young Mantas, they were so beautiful, graceful and surprisingly interested
in us.
Within minutes of getting into the water this big Manta came towards us and
elegantly swooped right underneath us
They had no fear of us at all, there have been quite a few boats here on the
Indonesian Rally but probably not enough for the Mantas to become as
happy around people as these lovely creatures appeared to be, they were
probably adolescents, they were about three meters across, the adults grow
to about five meters
The Mantas stayed with us for over half an hour which allowed us all time to
photograph and video as much as we liked, this one obviously wanted us to
get his best side
We knew there were Mantas here in this bay but nothing could have prepared
us for this magical encounter
