We get to see some weird and wonderful sights as we travel around.

Here are some from the last few weeks.

1. The runway in St Maarten is a bit short for the bigger planes and they have to hit the start of the runway early to be able to stop in time. These are a couple of shots taken by Katie from the beach bar at the end of the runway.

2. Katie also shot this bird that had the most amazingly symmetrical wingspan.

3. I’m sorry that this is such a poor photo but it is of a fish called a Remora that seem to be attracted to the boat.

At one stage we had 4 of these living beneath the boat for a few days. They seem to eat just about anything and will come right up to the surface to get a better position as they jostle for the scraps.

Apparently they attach themselves by suckers on the top of their head that look like the sole of a trainer with ridges running across the whole of their head. They are about 3ft long and they use these suckers to attach themselves to large fish like Sharks. Not sure why but I’m sure my good friend Mike Winters will e mail back with the full story as he is not only an IT techno Geek but also a great photographer, avid naturalist and a passionate conservationist.

4. At Catamaran Club marina here in Antigua there is a fantastic fishing guy who runs charters on his boat Obsession. I have never seen him return without a catch and most days he has some really big fish. Usually Whahoo and Dorado but also Sailfish and Swordfish. He has a regular clientele for his catch and sometimes cuts them up on the pontoon, throwing the scraps to the local cats and the bigger bits into the water where a shoal of large Tarpon (3ft to 4ft and chunky) wait right by the edge of the quay and then fight over the large chunks. Heads, whole skeletons, etc, all disappear in the blink of an eye. The cat looks very wary and even the humans don’t stray too close.
