Having left Bora Bora at 2.00pm in 15 knot easterly winds, we had timed our
arrival so as to arrive at the pass around mid morning when light improved
enough to see the very narrow channel and the many scattered coral heads
inside the lagoon. However the wind gods had other ideas and winds built
steadily to 20+ knots with gusts well over 30 knots and boat speeds
increased to over 9 knots requiring us to reef down so as not to arrive
before first light. Even so we were too early to negotiate the pass and had
difficulty finding anchoring spots shallow enough to enable us to sit
outside the atoll for a few hours while light improves and hopefully winds
die down.
