Because of the large tidal range all marinas in
Darwin are controlled by entrance locks with all but one located someway up the

river, with access governed by the time and range
of tides. We were fortunate to get a spot in Tipperary Waters
marina
to enable us to get some jobs done and also to
travel inland before we sail for Indonesia.
It was something of a shock to see just how shallow
the waters were in the very narrow, crowded river and even more of a shock to be
told as we motored slowly towards the entrance, that the lock gates were just
1.2 metres wider than Curious and the lock less than 2 metres longer in length.
A very tight squeeze given that the tide was pushing us north and the wind
blowing us in faster than we wanted to go.
