We continue to make our way south with a
mixture of strong northerlies and very light or windless days. We took the
opportunity to visit Santiago while in Portosin taking the bus inland to see
this great medieval city at the end of the long pilgrim route across the
northern part of Spain.
After a two day stopover in Bayona we left
Spanish waters and entered Portuguese territory in Povoa de Varzim from where
we have taken the excellent overground metro to Porto another World Heritage
city and on the opposite bank of the Rio Douro, Gaia the location of the many
great Port wine houses where we took a tour of Taylors one of the oldest
companies.
My lack of linguistic skills has been much
in evidence on this trip, French proving troublesome, Spanish difficult and
Portuguese impossible! I’m hoping that the Gibraltarians still use
English as their first language!!!
