Curious is now further west than ever before and just over 1/6th of the way around the world although we are now heading north through the islands towards the BVI's. Our first stop was on Nevis where we took time out to tour the small island before we sail the few miles north to the sister island of St Kitts.

As with most of the other islands their more recent history is linked to slavery and the plantation economy and everywhere there is evidence of this past, with decaying buildings and machinery.2009_02050009.JPG

The economy of most islands is now intertwined with tourism but the effects of the current economic crisis are clearly seen with most hotels less than half full in what is usually their peak season. This has a drip down effect through the rest of an islands economy with fewer tourists buying souvenirs, taking taxis, etc, etc.
