The passage from Porto Palo was marked with very light easterlies,
necessitating the use of the engine for the whole passage and with fuel
running low there was no option but to put into Bizerte to refuel and with
the hope of a couple of beers and a meal ashore.
In the event the marina that was there is being redeveloped and is out of
use.
After nosing around the port looking for a fuel dock we were eventually told
to go into the fishing port where we could get fuel with the help of an
"agent" whose costs and those of the port authorities would be covered in
the price of the fuel. Locals pay 1 dinar per litre (2 dinar to a euro)
whereas we would pay 0.8 euros per litre!
To be fair the agent ran us to the ATM, then to the supermarket, collected
water in jugs for us as there was non on the fishing port quay (what do the
fishing boats use?) and made sure we received the correct amount of fuel.
So, we drank our last beer, made a decent meal aboard and prepared for the
750nm to Gibraltar.
