As predicted the winds died and we motor sailed the last 12 hours or so.
Anyone coming here without recent updates from other cruisers will find that
their charts, both electronic and paper are inaccurate and run the risk of
running aground on the reef. There are no warning lights and the only radar
contact we had, even close to, was from a fishing vessel that was lost on
the reef quite recently and only the breakers give notice that there are
dangers ahead.
Fortunately we had some accurate waypoints and having slowed overnight so as
not to arrive too early, we were able to find the unmarked entrance and with
care find a sandy area to anchor.
The situation is a little surreal in that we are seemingly anchored in the
middle of the ocean, 100's of miles from the nearest land. The waters inside
the lagoon are crystal clear with probably the best visibility to be found
anywhere in the world. The snorkelling and diving are also said to be
excellent so we look forward to our time here.
