When we first arrived in the Marquesas we wondered why there where so many brand new 4x4's.
Once outside the main villages the reason becomes clear, there are almost no paved roads and the dirt tracks weave there way into the mountains, down beautiful green valleys with soaring waterfalls and over high mountain passes.
Looking down on the bay at Taiohae, with Curious anchored on the left
Trish and I hired a small 4x4 and took a road trip across the mountains to a village on the north of the island.

There are lots of feral goats, chickens and wild pigs on most islands and these are hunted for their meat by the locals.
Here a family of pigs crossed in front of the car with these little fallas bring up the rear
Fish features highly on most menus in the islands but there is also an abundance of fruit and vegetables
