As we move into the northern part of the San Blas chain the islands become
more frequent, the villages slightly larger and the reefs even more
treacherous. Even with the latest electronic and paper charts as well as
Erik Bauhaus' excellent cruising guide it is still essential to keep a
watchful eye out for the white foam that signifies another reef or sandbank
with seas breaking that have snared many a passing ship and more recently a
number of cruising boats.
The reward for any sailor able to navigate his way through the island chain
is possibly the best cruising ground in the whole of the Caribbean. There
are countless palm fringed islands, numerous safe a comfortable anchorages
in the shelter of the islands and outer reefs, warm and friendly people with
a culture and way of life that is very rare in this modern world.
