Ger & I are off on a month cruise north from
Phuket to Koh Phayam, near the Myanmar border--day sailing up the west coast of
Thailand. We left Yacht Haven marina a few days ago, spent a night at Ao
Chalong, where we picked up Ger's nephew, Michael, plus girlfriend for a days
sail up west coast Phuket, dropping them off in a bay near the airport--Nai Yang
bay---where we met up with Haven, who we have not seen for a while--a good
reunion.
Then on to Ban Thap Lamu--good sheltered
anchorage--where we met up with Mantra--again not seen for a while and a good
dinner ashore. And tonight, a quiet night to ourselves anchored inside Koh Phra
Thong. The solitude gives me a chance to write a well overdue blog.
Tomorrow we will arrive at Koh Phayam--near the
Myanmar border---reputed to be an idyllic and unspoiled island. Looking forward
to it, and if it is as good as its reputation, we'll likely spend a week
there.
And our cruise back south to Phuket will be at a
more leisurely pace, taking in the Surin and Similan islands--well known for
diving and snorkelling.
The sailing so far has been mixed. Yesterday and
the day before we had unexpectedly good winds, enabling us to sail almost all
the passages. Today the winds were back to form---varying in strength and
direction--and generally light--so we had to resort to the engine much of the
time. We hope for tomorrow!
A number of our friends on other boats are headed
for South Africa over the next few months---something we have deferred for a
year---and we wish them fair winds!
