Cay Caulker, Belize

Fruehmorgens am Heligigabend haben wir den Anker gelichtet und sind bei leichten N/NE Winden mit dem Screecher mit 4-6 Knoten Richtung Cay Caulker gesegelt. Zum Glueck hatten wir gute Sicht, so dass wir die suedliche Passage im Riff gleich gefunden haben und problemlos nach 3 Stunden in der seichten Bucht ankern konnten.

Ich habe mich gleich in die Zivilisation gestuerzt (Cay Caulker besteht aus ca. 30 Sandstrassen) und muehevoll ein Telefon gesucht, um die Lieben zu Hause anzurufen. Keine leichte Mission, weil die oertliche Telefongesellschaft jegliche Internettelefonie gebloggt hat, aber letzendlich doch erfolgreich.

Wir haben hier zwar keine schwuelen 30 Grad sondern eher 20-25 Grad, oft heiter bis wolkig, mal schauer, und oft auch recht windig. Kein Bikiniwetter, aber meistens im T-Shirt sehr angenehm. Schwer, sich die Schneemassen zu Hause vorzustellen!

Zurueck an Bord haben wir das Cockpit mit Palmenblaettern und Lichterketten geschmueckt, abends dann mit Sekt angestossen und die Idylle und Weihnachten mal ander genossen, bis wir dann an Land zum Essen gefahren sind.

Den 1. Weihnachtstag haben wir ganz entspannt verbracht, mit wenig Putzen und keinen Projekten, dafuer viel Lesen und etwas (unendlich langsamen) Internetcafe und unsere kleine Bescherung auf amerikanische Weise nach dem Fruehstueck.

Abends waren wir in einem total schoenen Restaurant, Coconut Plum Garden, mit Lagerfeuer und live Reggea Musik. Leider hat der Koch das Essen ziemlich verbaselt - und das lag nicht nur daran, dass unserer Erwartung ob derer Werbung sie seien ein Gourmetrestaurant recht hoch waren.

Belizes Festland ist wunderschoen und es gibt viel zu sehen, vor allem Dschungelnatur und Mayastaetten, wir versuchen gerade einen Landtag zu organisieren. Wahrscheinlich bleiben wir noch bis Silvester hier, dann geht’s weiter die mexikanische Kuesten gen Norden nach Cancun.

We left our lonely anchorage early in the morning in order to be able to cross the reef to Cay Caulker in good light. We had a wonderful relaxed Christmas sail with 4-6 knots with the screecher and anchored in the shallow bay three hours later. In the hope to still reach my beloved ones in Germany before everyone is asleep, I scanned the sandy streets for telephone operators. The local telfon company has all internet tools like skype blocked and the communication system is not the best, but finally I got lucky.

Difficult to imagine the mountains of snow at home. Though it’s not humid and hot with over 90 deg Fahrenheit, it’s still most of the time T-shirt weather and sun and clouds are taking turns. Just when the wind comes up I get out my jacket – and have Michael wondering, how I ever managed to survive a German winter….

We decorated the cockpit with palm leaves and light chains and cheered to our little solitary romantic Christmas with a bottle of Champagne before going ashore for dinner.

For Christmas day, we heard about this beautiful restaurant were looking forward to enjoy their gourmet kitchen. The setting was indeed beautiful, under palmtrees with a bonfire, hamac and live reggea music. Unfortunately, the food failed to meet their appraisals and our expectations – by far. However, we didn’t let it kill our cheerful Christmas spirit and still had a wonderful evening.

Belize mainland is most intriguing, with lots of dschungel and mayan sites to explore. We are investigating and organizing a little day excursion and will probably stay here til New Years. Then off North along the Mexican coast to Cancun, from where Michael has to fly to Boston again.
