Wind is back!
19.3.2013 - 02:10 - 513nm to go

The wind had completely died during the morning of the 17th. Well, not completely, maybe sometimes the breezes reached up to 4 knots. So we motored during the entire day. The forecast for the whole week looked pretty bad. Little to no wind! If we had had time, we would have waited for a better weather window in the Las Perlas, but everyone was eager to go and often, the forecast for more than 3 days isn't that accurate anyway. So we hoped for change. Naturally, for the better, though, not the worse...
Anyway, looked like we could get most out of it if we change course more southerly, towards the Malpelo Islands. This tiny spot belongs to Colombia and is hosting a military basis. We though we'd try our luck, but certainly didn't want to arrive there in the middle of the night. Hence we decided to stop the engines for dinner and then just drift during the night, some 35nm north of Malpelo. Looked like the current was taking us slowly westwards. Also, there was the slight hope of change in weather and some wind in the morning.
Without wind and waves, it was very, very calm. So after 2 night shifts, it was actually great that everybody could get a pretty good nights sleep.

The next morning, on the 18th, the weather report did show a little change: some wind now and then complete lulls til the end of the week, especially around Malpelo. And while we were debating what would be best to do - the wind came up a bit! Happily, we set sail - and have been sailing ever since! Sometimes only with 4 knots, and with half a knot current against us, we're approaching the Galapagos on the slow track - but who cares, anything better than motoring.
When I started my shift at midnight, the wind had been a bit better and we even did about 6 knots for hours. However, now I see big formations of clouds here and there and even some lightening earlier in the far distance, and the wind is more fluky now. But still sailing.
Hopefully we'll stay that lucky. Still have 513nm to go and motoring is not much fun at all.
We could also just drift and wait if the wind dies again - we certainly have enough food, and still good supply of fresh fruit and veggies. But that's not much fun, either.
So, lets keep the fingers crossed!

Liegt so ziemlich a.d.

Also, Daumendruecken!
