A lively sail across the Caribbean Sea with a head wind, we arrived late afternoon at the main island of Iles des Saintes, Terre D’en Haut, and moored off the only village in The Saintes of Bourg des Saintes.

The water is deep, but there are 80 moorings available at 15 Eu per night which are maintained and rented by Multiserve. They come out each day to check which yachts are on the moorings and you can either pay the boatmen, or at the office in village.

The village is cute. Fishing boats abound with restaurants, shopping and boulangerie.

We found the anchorage at Bourg des Saintes a bit rolly, so moved 2 miles to Inlet ‘a Cabrit again onto a mooring. Here there were only 12 moorings in a delightful bay and peaceful. Lovely to swim, snorkel and walk around the island.

We walked up the mountain footpath to Fort Josephine

Whilst Fort Napoleon on Terre d’en Haut has been fully restored, Fort Josephine is in a somewhat dilapidated state, but still very interesting to wander around.

The fort has a commanding view over the water to Terre D’en Haut and can see how easily the French could protect these islands from invasion.

After a week in The Saintes, it’s time to leave Guadeloupe and head south to Dominica. We dinghied across to Bourg des Saintes to check out on the Customs/Immigration computer, and pay our Multiserve mooring ball account.
