After Cuba we sailed back to Florida, and stopped in Dry Tortugas. Officials allowed us to anchor in the bay, however landing ashore was not allowed due to the huge amount of damage and debris everywhere. Most of the trees that were still sort of standing were totally brown. The Fort sustained a bit of damage, mostly to the walkway around the moat, the main Fort walls being 8 ft thick were intact. Arriving at Dry Tortugas at sunrise We dinged across to Loggerhead Key to snorkel and was very happy to find the water clear and generally the reef in reasonable condition with quite a lot of small fish, although we saw no large fish. Lighthouse on Loggerhead Key House on Loggerhead Key near the beach totally broken in two Diving around Loggerhead key Back at Garden Key, the main key with Fort Jefferson we found the remains of the sailing yacht which went aground Meshugga with Fort Jefferson in the background |
