Guadeloupe - Baie-Mahault

We’ve been in Guadeloupe for 3 weeks, unfortunately with some yacht issues which were unforeseen.

On our way down from Barbuda our Genoa furler stopped working. Nicholas took it apart to find the problem, which was a worn gearing ring. A replacement is not available here in Guadeloupe, and the manufacturers Bamar have discontinued our model. Nicholas has done a McGuyer to make it work temporarily and we’re hoping that Bamar in France find a spare gearing in their warehouse, as we really don’t want to spend $16 000, on a whole new furler.

Also, the Hydraulic system that picks up our dinghy stopped working. The nearest Tenderlift agent is in Martinique, so again Nicholas has had to take the entire thing apart, to figure out how it works and to try find the problem, - and found that the issue is the Hydraulic Pump. The agents both in Martinique and Florida, USA do not have stock of replacement pumps, so we are dealing with Tenderlift in France - who also don’t have stock. We currently are hoping that the manufacturer in Italy gets a move on, and supplies the pump to Tenderlift in less than the 4 weeks (still) before Tenderlift can courier it to us.
The dinghy is currently (for 3 weeks now) in the water, and at night chained to Meshugga as dinghy theft is the most common boating theft issue in the Caribbean.

Cruising is often said to be ‘Working on yachts in beautiful locations around the world’.

Not all has been work, and we’ve continued to sightsee and explore Guadeloupe.
