VS has relocated from Richard's Bay in KZN down to Simonstown in the Eastern Cape, a very different place. En route an overnight stop was made at Plettenberg where there is a very large, very noisy, very smelly, Cape sealion Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus rookery. Here are some of them taking it easy in the morning light:

As you can see they are able to climb substantial cliffs in order to reach a nice flat spot to relax. Like all sea lions they are a very disputatious bunch, constantly arguing and fighting but also clearly relaxing and playing together happily. There are about 1.5-2 million of these guys in SA and Namibia. They have given rise to the very closely related Australian sealion which is a much rarer animal at 30-50 000.
