Big ferns

NZ has an ideal climate for ferns. There are over 160 species here, including the iconic tree ferns of which there are eight species in two genera. Here aresome beautiful Katote Cyathea smithii (the skirt of dead fronds is diagnostic) in a lovely wet forest along the Buller River in South Island.
 
 
All of NZ's tree ferns have survived without extinction since humans arrived here - they've fared much better than have the animals luckily, because they're beautiful.
