Battlefield information overload led the VS crew to a couple of days of R & R in the mountains on the KZN-Lesotho border. This is the site of the spectacular Drakensberg escarpment with peaks in excess of 3000m formed of 180 million year old lavas. And due to the absence of lions, it's great walking country:

Below is the valley of the Tulega river:

A bit further up it has cut a very impressive knife gorge, seen here with an intrepid explorer therein:

And this is the justly famous amphitheatre which contains the world's second highest waterfall - or it would, but for the drought, with the gorge under the sunlit rock in the centreground:

The plateau in the distance is at 3000m.
And although there are no lions there is other wildlife:

This guy is a stream frog; there are several species in SA, all very similar and I'm not sure which one he is. And here is a nice snake, probably preying on all the frogs:

And a very unusual butterfly with bare forewings, present in large numbers:

The whole area is famous for Bushman rock paintings, which date from several thousand years ago until relatively recently - they were pushed out of the area/exterminated by advancing black tribes like the Zulu shortly before Europeans arrived. Here are some we found; much more spectacular examples exist:
