We’ve been to Binna Burra, 1000m up in the Lamington National Park. A
lovely place. While walking the trails there a family came past with a pet
kangaroo hopping along beside them like a puppy. He’s called Sylvester. His
mother was killed by a car, but he was rescued. A lot of kangaroos get hit by
cars because they use the hot tarmac to keep warm in the cold nights, often with
fatal results. Sylvester was lucky. He wasn’t weaned, but apparently you can get
kangaroo formula milk from the vet upon which he has thrived. He has a pillow
case as a pouch and is very lazy, expecting to get carried around everywhere as
his mother would have done. Here he is, getting a cuddle from your
correspondent:
And here, standing on his own two feet accepting a piece of grass which
he’s just started to eat:
Is he cute (cute as, for any NZ readers), or what? However he’s an Eastern
Grey so he’s going to get BIG. He’ll almost need his own trailer or horsebox.
Apparently they normally return themselves to the wild after a few years, which
is nice. |
