Acadia has some wonderful walking. The landscape is
heavily glaciated granite rising to 1500 feet, with thick forest at lower levels
and bare rock at the top. In the early days each village formed a Path
Improvement Committee to create a network of trails to attrac, and some were
constructed by rich philanthropists.
Here is Alison on the Precipice Trail which goes
straight up a granite cliff using iron rungs and handrails (a couple more would
be good!).
And here is the top of Cadillac Mountain, the
highest in the Park at 1500 feet, showing the bare granite dome emerging from
the coniferous forest.
Why Cadillac? Many of the early settlers on this
coast were French. Cadillac was one of them. He didn't stay long and moved
on to found Detroit - and hence the car. Bet you didn't know
that!
