One of our best purchases so far has been a set of boules with which to play petanque, bought on La Palma in the Canaries. There are of course no proper pitches here, even on the French islands, but the beaches provide a varied and challenging terrain. The game seen here in full swing on Pigeon Beach Antigua features three players and a referee, all clearly suffering from middle age spread. The referee is needed all too frequently resolve disputes in these hotly contested games by measuring the distance between the 'jack' and the two nearest boules.
