Now that's what I call a sand dune!

At the mouth of the Sigatoka River are some truly
enormous sand dunes - very rare in the tropics. the sand has been carried down
the river to the coast from the mountains, and then blown across the coastal
reef to form these giant dunes:
The dunes are about 100m high, and cover many
hectares, a very impressive sight. There is very little dune vegetation which
makes them ideal for practicing rugby! The game here is 7s, and here is the
local team in practise, ably abetted by our friend David Kidwell:
These guys represent Sigatoka Town, and they
practice up here (they have to climb to the tops, where the sand is flat enough)
three times during the week after work; they practise at the ground for the
other two nights and on Saturday they play a game. That may be why they are the
national champions. The whole country is rugby mad, and Fiji has just won the
Goldcoast 7s in Queensland beating the All Blacks 32-14, much to the surprise of
NZ!
