Rig problems

We've come to a cheap, by American standards, Marina for the rig work. It is right next to the busy airport, and plane watching is fun - our mast on the right:

This is the problem. Not good; this is 18mm 1x19 stainless wire only six years old. This should not have happened!

Here it is in close up. Five wires have broken just inside the swage. Stainless steel is a very brittle material and is not really suitable for use at sea as it can break without warning. Untreated, we would have lost the mast. Our rigger thinks we have been unlucky with a piece of defective steel, possibly from China which is infamous for it.

Here is Joe the rigger fixing it:

And here am I, being instructed in the finer points of rigging:

Sadly all is not yet well. We need to replace both lower cap shrouds, not in itself very difficult but unfortunately Seldén US have lost control of their stock system. Having originally promised that they could supply the parts they changed their mind when we ordered, saying that they had only one, and would have to order the other from Sweden. We're still waiting. Watch this space!
