We're now in Camden, a beautiful seaside town on
the west side of Penobscot Bay and home of a large fleet of
windjammers. Unusually for coastal Maine, it also has hills. Here is the
view from the top of Mount Battie, looking west down over the harbour
with some of the many islands in the background.
And here are some of the windjammers in the
harbour. They are schooners, because the rear mast is taller than the front
one. They are used as trip boats, some going out several times a day and others
for a week or more. The biggest ones still have no engine and have to manoeuvre
in the very congested harbour using launches as tugs. Camden built the world's
biggest 5-masted schooner.
