2115hrs UT, 02.12. Well, the easterly wind has arrived. Not strong enough, and not in quite the best direction for us, but at least we can at last sail westwards. We have put up the large gaily coloured cruising chute (admirably mended by Alison) and are now proceeding west at about 5 knots (with a bit of help from the North Equatorial Current, adding another half knot or so). Long may it last - fingers crossed.
My turn on Mother Watch again today. Lovely chicken fajitas for dinner, cooked by my own fair hand with helpful advice from Alison and Tom. But before dinner i put on the watermaker (it runs on mains power, so we can only use it when the generator is on) to top up the tank. Unfortunately in my hurry to get dinner started I forgot to open a seacock valve, resulting in a hose bursting under pressure and spraying water everywhere. An easy repair though, and a valuable lesson learned. Not a mistake I'll make again.
We're watching the Tom Hanks' produced mini-series 'Pacific' about the US Marines war against the Japanese which Tom brought with him. Quite a palaver, requiring the laptop to be set up in the cockpit while we all crowd round it. The speakers are not powerful enough so we need to use the subtitles, and of course we also have to keep a good look out even in this empty sea, so the radar is on and we stop the video every now and again to check around us. Not quite like watching in the living room. The series is not nearly as good as 'Band of Brothers' but it really does bring home the full horror of the Pacific war. Ugh.
Joe's scald seems to be much better. we're all sure that it was his enforced swim that has reduced the severity of the injury. He may not lose any skin at all.
