One year older - and shipwrecked

Older, because yesterday, March 31 2011, marked the completion of exactly one year of our voyage - we left Deganwy Marina on 1 April last year. Since then we have sailed over 10 000 miles, and I have slept aboard every single night - Alison took the opportunity to jump ship while we were in Pwllheli just before leaving the UK to go to a Health Spa for a girlie weekend.

And shipwrecked because we touched bottom for the first time trying to get into the Anegada anchorage. It was always a tricky and shallow approach, but unknown to us (sailing guidebook and charts not adequately updated) last year's hurricane hit Anegada hard from the southeast, depositing lots of sand in the channel. Anyway we ground to a halt in the entrance, in the centre of the buoyed channel. Luckily it was soft sand and we only just touched. Swift reversal of course got us floating again and we have anchored in 3.5m about 0.5km from the shore - nice and safe but a long and bumpy dinghy ride (especially in the dark).

We're too far from the shore to see in a photo, so here instead is a nice picture of the local terns (I think Royal Terns Sterna maxima, but there are loads of species of terns which all look very similar to me) taking a well earned break from fishing. As you can see from the colour of the picture the sky, in celebration of our anniversary, was dark and overcast for the day.
