How long is NZ?

An amusing correspondence has been playing out in the NZ newspapers recently, viz. how far is it by road from Cape Reinga at the northern tip of NZ to Bluff at the southern tip of South Island? A pretty lame question you might think, but some wag had noticed that if you look at the displayed signs at each location you get different answers!
Here is Alison at Bluff, with Cape Reinga 1416km away:

But when she was at Cape Reinga a month earlier the sign clearly showed Bluff to be 1452km distant:

The signs are erected by the New Zealand AA, and a fascinating (to me at least, even if not to you) round of buck passing ensued with many and various state and local agencies all trying to blame someone else while creative letter writers came up with all sorts of reasons, some ingenious and some quite bizarre, for the difference. It was a hoot. The issue was never resolved to my knowledge.
