A frustrating day. We've been experimenting with
various combinations of sails for downwind work (which is how we'll cross the
Atlantic on the Trade Winds). However, after having trouble with the cruising
chute this morning, late this afternoon we managed to jam the mainsail half in
and half out of the mast (it furls away inside the mast in a long thin roll).
This is not good news.
The only way to free it is to go up the mast.
Alison went first and made some progress. Ian tried next and made sufficient to
enable us to furl it away safely. It's still jammed we think, but at least
it's away. Proper investigations will have to wait until we're at anchor in
Madeira. the lighter members of the crew have had enough of being flung around
like a pendulum weight. We've all had a long tiring day.
Now back on course for Madeira under genoa alone;
200 miles to go at 5 knots. Should be there sometime on Friday.
