We've moved up to the very beautiful Great Barrier
Island, pop c900 - so named by Captain Cook (although he never landed) becaue it
forms a barrier protecting the Auckland area from the Pacific. It really is a
delightful place with wonderful scenery, fascinating history, great wildlife,
quiet roads and nice people. Paradise - and yet most New Zealanders have
never visited.
Here are a few photos to give you a
taste:
Above is Fitzroy Harbour on the west coast looking
south; VS just behind the little island in the left middle
distance.
Below is the view looking to the north east from
the top of Mount Hobson/Hirakimata over the Okiwi swamp with one of NZ's best
but least visited surf beaches in the distance:
Below, VS in Whangaparapara Harbour with skyline
reminiscent of Ua Pou in French Polynesia:
Half of the crew takes a well-earned rest in a
hotpool after a hot tramp through the bush:
And the same half of the crew, this time sporting
her new Specsavers bifocal sunglasses, at Medlands Beach on the eastcoast -
another empty surf beach:
Just a taste; more following.
