All across the Pacific islanders treat school with
some respect, and Fiji is no exception. Uniform is always worn, with pride. Here
are the kids turning out from a primary school in northern Vanua Levu near
Labasa. This is sugar cane country and the farmers are almost exclusively of
Hindi speakers of Indian origin. School is not free in Fiji, so schooling is
dependent on the economy to a much greater extent than in Europe - if the
crops fail not all the kids will be able to afford school. Perhaps that's one
reason why they seem to take such a pride in belonging. Every single child is
beautifully turned out, even at the end of their day:
Interestingly this particular school was hosting
the Constitutional Commission that afternoon, nearing the end of their evidence
gathering trip around the country.
