The crew (Alison, Richard, Ian and Frans) have now assembled here in Pwllheli and the quite appalling mess in the boat has begun to resolve itself as equipment and supplies get properly stowed. The stream of bills, once seemingly never ending, is beginning to dry up. But we will never again make the mistake of doing annual maintenance at the same time as preparing for a long trip. The trauma has been shattering. But it's definitely time to leave the country - I saw a gritting lorry out in Conwy last Friday!
So we leave tomorrow on the evening tide bound for Madeira and then the Canaries. Should take about three weeks - but true to form the weather is currently horrid, rain with strong winds on our nose. The plan is to go south and west of Ireland and then out west of the continental shelf as we cross Biscay and passing 50-100 miles offshore as we pass northern Spain.
The photo shows the mess on deck and dockside yesterday, plus a glimpse of Ian's leg
