Leaving Newport heading for Canada we stopped for a couple of days at Martha's Vineyard. Despite only having a couple of hundred years of history the origins of the name are lost in antiquity. It does now have a vineyard or two, but was mainly a whaling island. It became world famous in my youth as the place of the infamous Chappaquidick incident, in which a young lady drowned in the car of one of the Kennedy clan in circumstances that are still unclear.
Here is the harbour, with VS's mast in the middle distance. A lovely place.

A still dull morning.

The town is full of beautiful old houses from whaling days, immaculately restored and maintained:

And this incredible building, which as you can see is a Santander bank. It was a local bank, built as a curiosity over 100 years ago, now bought out by Santander. The only bank featured in this Blog.

And this is why. The building was erected around this old vault, which almost uniquely in America is on display as a heritage item.

Note the lack of queuing customers. Santander UK this is not!!
