So, having got started again I'll revert to a more chronological order.
Picking up where I left off, we went to Christchurch on the South Island for Christmas. Our son Tom has taken up surfing, and his mother was determined to follow suit - so off we went to the beach just before Christmas on an untypically murky day.
Here are some of the motley crew on the beach. Hannah (Tom's girlfriend) on the right, our daughter Kate who joined us for Christmas in the centre, and half of the crew of the Vulcan Spirit, somewhat strangely attired, stage right. The other half of the crew knows fine well that he's too old and insufficiently nimble to take up surfing and so took the photos for posterity.

Learning is a slow process (apparently surfing has the slowest progression rate  from beginner to adept of all sports due to the very small percentage of time spent balancing on a board compared to the age spent waiting for just that right wave). But here is the world's most recent tyro surfer getting the hang of it. Up:

By this time (a good hour in) our heroine had boldly declared herself a natural. Subsequent events have given the lie to this claim.

But Kate made good progress, helped no doubt by her prowess on a snowboard:

And enjoyed herself, it seems:
