Before departure from Reunion one absolutely essential task had to be undertaken. Here is your correspondent hard at work in the galley of VS (not a common sight), making his own ice-cream. Having given up sugar normal commercial ice-cream is off limits (except when I weaken). So homemade is the order of the day. In my ignorance I had not realised that it is really just cold egg custard. Instead of sugar one uses glucose syrup and dextrose powder. It makes lovely ice-cream, and three litres of the stuff turns out to be just enough for a ten day trip (the other half of the crew having initially turned up her nose at the stuff sadly decided that she rather liked it).![]() And here we are at sea in lovely conditions flying both foresails in proper cutter fashion. This requires a nice beam wind or a close reach - conditions almost unheard of for VS. ![]() And below, South Africa in sight after quite a challenging trip, racing to beat the southerly buster into Richard’s Bay ![]() We made it. But little did we know what the next buster had in store for us a week later, supposedly safe in port. |
