Coming from NZ and the Pacific Islands we have been astonished by the
abundance and variety of birdlife in the Bundy area. The hinterland here is
heavily agricultural but enough wild land survives to support a lot of birds.
Here are a few of them:
Australasian pelican Pelecanus conspicillatus
Black backed Australian magpie Gymnorhina tibicen. These
birds become tame, but occasionally very aggressive towards humans. We have seen
several cyclists with electrical cable ties fixed like spikes to the top of
their helmets to ward off magpie attacks!
Brahminy kite Milvus indus
Galah Cacatua roseicapella, a pigeon sized cockatoo
Masked lapwing Vanellus miles. This bird has recently introduced
itself to NZ, probably because of the spread of grassland. In NZ it is known as
the spur-winged plover because of the small wrist spur that you can see poking
out of its wing feathers (on line between black & white).
And lastly, for now, a laughing kookaburra Dacelo novaeguineae. As
you can see this is a very large kingfisher with a quite amazing song, a loud
warbling laugh.
