The War of 1812 was one of the most stupid and pointless ever fought. The US Congress declared war on Great Britain having been provoked beyond reason by British interference with trade in the Caribbean. The War lasted until 1815, and was entirely inconclusive. It did spawn however the American National Anthem, the Star Spangled Banner, composed as a poem on the deck of a British warship shelling Fort McHenry by an American prisoner Francis Scott Key and later set to a popular British tune.
But all around Chesapeake this inconclusive little war is being remembered with a somewhat manufactured and artificial 200th anniversary. As an example, here is Maryland's 2012 car licence plate:
