Having been caught out by the Bank Holiday, we then
got caught out again by the end of Summer Time having lost track of what day it
was. Perhaps we're just losing the plot.
Anyway, we have been busy exploring this
surprisingly verdant and extremely mountainous island. Below is a view looking
into the caldera of Taburiente, one of Spains thirteen national parks. This part
of the island is cloaked in forests of endemic Canary Pine which is very
cleverly evolved to withstand fires - presumably frequent in this
very volcanic environment. The tree can lose all its leaves and branches to
a fire, but dormant buds under the bark cause it to spring back to life, covered
in new green needles, almost immediately afterwards.
The ridge in the background is the crater rim at
around 2500m.
