We've moved up to near Whitianga on the Coromandel
Peninsula, to the famous Cathedral Cove. Here it is:
The rock is white ignimbrite, mixture of
small angular blocks of pumice encased in fine grained volcanic ash formed in
explosive volcanic eruptions about 8mya. As you can see, it erodes into
wonderful shapes and is readily undercut by the sea (the tide here is about
1.5m):
Next stop Whitianga which is very important in
NZ history twice, for both Eurpeans and Maori, but for different
reasons.
