A brief trip to Martha's Vineyard, holiday playground of the Presidents including Barack Obama who left the island ahead of our arrival (coincidence?). In fact a very brief trip - just one night, notable for three things:
  1. We had to motor all the way from Nantucket (20 miles or so), despite a lovely sailing wind, due to the fact that all the engine electrics had died just as we started off and I didn't dare stop the engine until diagnosing the cause. Several hours of panic-stricken reading of manuals and rooting around looking for fuses ensued, involving taking up floorboards, emptying cupoards, tracing wiring looms, etc etc. The cause was eventually tracked down to my having switched the engine electrics off at the wheel when starting the engine. Putting the switch in the correct position resolved the problem. Chris had noticed the switch while stering but had been too polite to point it out, naively assuming that I just couldn't be that stupid. Wrong, Chris!
  2. Meeting up with Jenny & Robbie from 'Maymio' again after several weeks separation. As usual, they were nice and snug, cheekily moored up to a protected private jetty in the harbour while we were miles out at anchor.
  3. Failure to come anywhere near Tom & Hannah's record for bat & ball - over 200 consequetive hits, achieved on Marie Galante in the French Caribbean (but without independent veification). Here is Alison, on her way to exceeding 30. A woeful total, almost embarrassingly bad - the only saving grace is that Kate & Chris turned out to be far worse, if that can be believed. Tom, your (alleged) record is clearly safe from us.
