Have at last got out from under the frustratingly slow moving rain system that has bedevilled us for 36 hours, with light variable winds and drizzly showers.  Rapid progress to the west now resumed. ETA (about!) Monday next week.
Alison spoke last night to the very pleasant Indian crew of a Japanese ship taking sawn timber from Chile to Kawasaki - the first vessel we have seen in 14 days. They likewise had seen no other traffic until encountering us since leaving Chile. Strange that in all this empty ocean our paths should cross so closely that they had to alter course to avoid us. As a sailing vessel we have right of way, but you always have to radio up to check that they're awake & alert because several yachts have been run down by cargo vessels that hadn't seen them. Just as well that she did too - they had mistaken our white masthead light for a star.
