While in Wales we met a couple, Pat & Gwyneth,
staying on Ynys Enlli/Bardsey as part of the resident population of well under
ten people. Several years ago they had been on the BBC's Survivor programme
(a small group marooned for a year on Taransay in the Hebrides; the series that
made Ben Fogle famous). We knew the farmer on Bardsey, who subsequently moved to
the isle of Muck in the Hebrides (our favourite Scottish island); when we went
to visit them last summer we found that Pat & Gwyneth had moved there too,
having bought and erected one of the housing pods from 'Survivor' on the island
with the permission of the Laird (the island is a benign feudal dictatorship,
and works extremely well as a result).
Anyway, Pat & Gwyneth had lost touch with one
of their friends from 'Survivor' who had returned to St Kitts after 38 years in
Birmingham. We said they were going there, and they gave us a letter for
him. Some nine months later we have delivered it, much to the enormous
surprise and pleasure of the recipient - Pat & Gwyneth had been sending
him Christmas cards every year but with no return address. The photo shows me
and Gordon Carey, who is now a taxi driver on St Kitts and as happy as Larry.
Now we've had enough of St Kitts and we're off a
few miles north to two Dutch islands, St Eustatius and
Saba.
