We're not quite sure where halfway is - or rather, was, because we have declared it passed. We decided that 1500nm to go would be halfway, but we have sailed some way from the direct route in a largely fruitless search for wind during the first half which will therefore be longer than the second (we hope!).
Anyway, we're now sailing nearly due west at last, and have been for the last 24 hours - but rather more slowly than we'd like because the Trade Winds though present at long last are much weaker than we'd expected. Ah well, such, it seems, is life at sea.
The phrase 'Trade Winds' comes from the Latin verb 'trado' meaning constant or consistent. It seems that its modern connotation of winds facilitating trade with the West Indies and the Americas is a fortuitous coincidence - unless of course the etymology of 'trade' shows a link to 'trado'. We have no internet access, so can't check.
