'Vulcan Spirit' has arrived safely at El Porvenir, gateway to the San Blas archipelago, and is now rocking gently at anchor in 10m of clear blue water behind this tiny islet upon which there is space, just, for immigration officials, a tiny army post (goodness knows why), and a small sandy runway from which one used to be able to fly to Panama City (but not at the moment because it's being rebuilt by a JCB).

Here is almost the whole island - all that's missing on the right is the end of the runway. Army, navigation authority and immigration are in the buildings to left of centre, while the white building to right of centre is the airstrip control tower. And that's it.

Here is a closer view of one end. On the left is 'hotel' (in reality some simple bunk rooms) and on the right the Kuna indians' museum - the San Blas islands are a totally autonomous part of Panama, run by the Kuna for themselves. More on that in another blog posting - it's a fascinating story.
