Visitors Depart and Medical Emergency
Eowyn

Éowyn is in Rodney Bay Marina,
St Lucia
The last couple of days with Mike
& Val went pretty much to plan with visits to Trois Islets and then a
motorsail to Marin. After a great lunch on Saturday they departed for the long
journey home via Paris including a change of airports there.
Our Sunday sail to Rodney Bay was
fast and lively with winds up to 30 knots but whilst it did not trouble us, it
took its toll on a seam of the bimini!
Settled in the marina we couldn't
wait to revisit the great sushi restaurant and the next morning, all was normal
with me working on some routine maintenance and Chris at Suds washing the
accumulated laundry.
The first sign of a problem was a
pain in her left knee and throughout the afternoon all her joints became
painful. We put it down to an allergic reaction and gave her Piriton. The night
was difficult as she developed a fever and vomiting and by daybreak an ambulance
was called. By now she was almost paralysed and it took a superhuman effort by
the ambulance crew to get her off Éowyn. With lights and sirens we rushed to the
ER room at Tapion hospital where she was put on saline and vitals monitored.
Blood oxygen was low as was blood pressure. The admitting doctor thought it
might be Dengue or Chicungunya with the latter being most likely. The pain was
excruciating but eased gradually with some care.
She was admitted and out into
isolation where she remains. The symptoms have eased but there have been
relapses. If confirmed by the blood tests this will be only the second case of
this virus in St Lucia although in Martinique, 25 miles away there have been
3,000 this year. Chris has been visited daily by an immunologist from the SL
Ministry of health who also came to Eowyn to check she was not infested with
mossies!
She will not be released until
Saturday at the earliest as they want the infectious stage to pass.
