Éowyn is on passage to Richard Bay, South Africa in position 21:23.771S 054:44.443E

We had rented a car to explore La Reunion in the 5 days we had there. Parts of the Island are very picturesque, volcanic hills with many waterfalls dominating the vista. The towns have a totally French feel with prices to match. Cuisine is mainly Creole with some French.

The yacht harbour at Le Port is the back end of beyond and the rental car was essential for any exploring. I won't complain however, as like Mauritius our stay was totally free, sponsored by the harbour.

Emilio on Kalliope had arrived 2 days earlier and commissioned a rigging check from the onsite rigger Ben. Two cracked spars were discovered so we brought forward our own rig check. Fortunately the faults with our rig were confined to 47 split pins!

The night before departure we had the usual party with music, dancing, Creole food and the prize giving. We were very content with our second place in the last leg and everyone was delighted to see Jeannius win the catamaran class.

The start of this leg was bizarre in the extreme. After the start we had to pass a yellow buoy to starboard. We had gone to look at it beforehand so knew what it looked like. We were amazed when every other yacht headed off on the wrong course. I confirmed the mark with rally control and then protested the entire fleet! All bar 3 altered course to take the mark correctly, leaving us half a mile clear in front. Of course it did not last long but it was quite amusing to be leading Grand Filou, a Shipman 63!

We had a surprisingly good day of spinnaker sailing, bearing in mind the light forecast. We are now entering the night with main & genoa sailing steadily at 5 knots in 10 knots of wind.
