Pre Carnival in Recife - photos

Éowyn is now moored in the
Cabanga Yacht Club, Recife, Brazil in position 08:04.805S 034:53.355W
We arrived at Cabange YC about
2 hours before high water on Sunday and there was just enough water to get in.
Paul & Suzana were off duty but had come to see us run
aground!!
The mooring is described as a
Marina, but as the setup is geared to power yachts, the facilities for sail
boats are very poor. We cannot walk ashore and when we arrived there was no
power available - after much persuasion from Paul, we did get power a few days
later but the wiring is typical Brazilian with wires exposed to the elements.
WARC staff also did a sterling job in arranging a fuelling facility as this
difficult to achieve here in Recife. Fuel of decent quality was pumped from a
bowser to a work boat and then to the yachts - expensive but quite
convenient.
Like many places in Brasil,
the yacht club buildings are grandiose but receive little by way of maintenance
so the approach to the showers is lined in marble but the taps are missing when
you get there. However one bonus is a superb swimming pool.
We managed to repair some of
the faults which developed in the sail from Salvador, but the Duogen is out of
action yet again and requires a part from the UK. I hope to nurse our failing
batteries until Martinique where I know I can source the correct
size.
On Wednesday we took a coach
tour of old Recife and Olinda where we saw the preparations for
Carnival.

Yesterday evening we visited
Spettus, a Brasilian Restaurant where endless cuts of meat, lobster etc are
presented at the table on spits. It was quite expensive but easily the best meal
in Brasil so far.
Not all of the world ARC fleet
are here yet. Catamarans Destiny & Jeannius are on their way and Thor VI is
still stuck in Salvador having his forestay and furling gear
replaced.
Tomorrow is the start of
carnival. we intend to go into town very early but still cannot guess how
crowded it will be. On Sunday we have a more organised day for the Olinda
Carnival.
On the 10th we set off again,
this time for our own base in Grenada. Eowyn will complete her circumnavigation
when we cross our track at Point Salines. Bob's wife Kathy should be there to
meet us if all goes to plan. |
