We had left St Georges, Grenada for
Carriacou, planning to spend a few days diving before exploring the Southern
Grenadines.
After a night in Tyrell Bay, we
anchored in Hillsborough and had one dive with Max of Carriacou Silver Diving. I
was aware that the main domestic batteries were not performing correctly, but it
became clear that 2 of three 3 had failed completely! This was the culmination
of a series of the minor gear failures which curse the cruising
yachtsman!
After many telephone calls, it was
apparent that the only batteries available in this part of the Caribbean were in
American sizes and these would not fit into the battery box. An Email from Leon
Schultz gave some suggestions, but his alteration of the battery box seemed too
complicated for my limited woodworking skills.
A final call to Sea Services
chandlery on Martinique located the correct size of battery but this meant a 140
mile passage North.
Making the best of it, we anchored on
Friday night in Salt Whistle Bay, Mayreau and tonight we are in Petit Byahaut, a
delightful remote bay in St Vincent. We will stop tomorrow in St Lucia, arriving
in Fort de France on Monday pm.
